Imagine living in a community where the health and well-being of each resident was put on the highest priority; whether it be their physical, mental or social condition. And imagine if this was achieved not through governmental handholding … but the development of self-efficacy and personal agency.
Imagine living in a community where neighborhood-driven serendipity and chance encounter was the fuel for career enhancement and personal development – literally creating opportunities around every corner.
Imagine living in community where the days of small locally-owned businesses were the anchors of the community are recreated today. These anchors will return to being the civic pillars of your community they’ve always been, defending against the hijacking of the social and cultural fabric by nondescript Wall Street chain stores.
Imagine living in a community where solving civic problems and realizing community opportunities was not left to government and institutions; but became the domain of the people as they identified what was important to them and banded together to implement solutions to these prioritized issues.
And imagine living in a community that was fun; where getting up in the morning was an opportunity to have unexpected new experiences – experiences that make your life as fulfilling as you imagined when you were young and the world was unshackled and yours for the taking … not just more of the same as it seems like it’s turned into.
Melvin’s Neighborhood is the embodiment of the imagination. It gives you the opportunity to turn your life and that of those around you into experiences full of contributions, personally and collectively in the community. Take the chance and make your journey one that takes you on the the road to your Perfect World.
Joining the Neighborhood
Becoming a resident of Melvin’s Neighborhood costs you nothing. You register and become part of the community at any Front Porch (merchant) on the Neighborhood network. In addition, we will also be creating pop-up registration sites at local colleges, famers markets, parks and other gathering places you would normally frequent.
Honing your Self-efficacy
Once you register as a Neighborhood Resident, we ask you to jump right in and take a “Look In The Mirror”. The “Mirror” consists of twenty self-assessment questions that provides you with a reflection of what you’re doing to improve your physical, mental and social state.
Every morning the Neighborhood will send you a email that contains six suggestions that are created from the reflection provided by your look in the “Mirror” as well how you have engaged with the Neighborhood’s Front Porches (merchants). We ask you break out of your comfort zone and follow Melvin’s lead. If you do, the next time you look in the “Mirror” you may be a little further down the road on the journey to your Perfect World.
Taking the “Mirror” assessment isn’t a one time event. We ask you to make a habit of it. At least once a month take “look” and see how well Melvin’s morning nudges are working.
Becoming a good Neighbor
It’s not enough just to be of Resident of the Neighborhood, or any neighborhood or community for that matter. You have to participate and be a contributing member. Everyone, no matter their age or socioeconomic level has something to offer the Neighborhood. Everyone’s efforts can contribute to the rich diverse tapestry of your community. This contribution is easily done through the volunteer cause projects each Front Porch of the Neighborhood will be spearheading. Whatever your passion and skillset, there will be an outlet for it in the Neighborhood.
Being part of Melvin’s Neighborhood is not something you do. Being a Resident is a lifestyle. It’s a way you conduct yourself. Looking for the good in people and helping them see their full potential is what feeds the Neighborhood. As part of it – we expect you to join in.
